Mo Willems Week

Welcome to Mo Willems week!!! You know Elephant and Piggie and the Pigeon, but do you know about all his other wonderful books? We are some of the biggest Mo fans out there and we can’t wait to share our favorites with you!

Leonardo & Sam. These friends are such great examples of compassion, awareness, bravery, and adaptability.

In Leonardo The Terrible Monster, Leonardo is determined to prove he is not terrible at being a monster by “scaring the tuna salad” out of Sam. But maybe being a terrible monster doesn’t mean you are terrible at everything? Maybe Leonardo is meant for something more?

In Sam the Most Scaredy-Cat Kid In The Whole World, Sam meets someone who is just as scared of everything as he is, maybe they can be brave together?

These two books are some of my favorite to read aloud. You can’t help but share these buddies’ love and laughter with them!

Because a man was inspired to compose music, and a girl was given the chance to attend the symphony, her life was changed. Because her life was changed, another’s life was changed.

Because is different from what we usually expect from Mo, with beautiful illustrations by Amber Ren, it is an inspiring story that brings attention to the ripple effect one person’s choices can make and the changes they can create for the better! It is a must read!

Nanette’s Baguette. This hilarious, rhyming text adventure takes us along on Nanette’s first solo trip to the bakery. Will she succeed or make a choice she regrets?

My favorite thing about Nanette’s adventure is that she is honest and brave and that her mom is understanding and kind. This book is a wonderful example of how kids AND parents can better handle making mistakes and trying again!

Mo Willems narrates his own audiobooks (at least all the ones I have listened to) and they are all FANTASTIC. Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed is one of our favorites. They are the perfect length for running kids to school or between errands. These short stories are one of the easiest ways to ease kids into the habit of listening to audiobooks!

Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed tells the story of a naked mole rat who decides to try something new by getting dressed, everyone makes fun of him until someone convinces them to try it! It’s a great lesson about being different and accepting differences in others! It’s what makes life wonderful!

A book, being a physical object, engenders a certain respect that zipping electrons cannot. Because you cannot turn a book off, because you have to hold it in your hands, because a book sits there, waiting for you, whether you think you want it or not, because of all these things, a book is a friend.
— Mo Willems

Well said Mo. I have always called my favorite, most familiar, books my “old friends.”

What is your favorite Mo Willems book?
