I first encountered Kitty O’Meara’s work during the pandemic, like so many of you did. She put into words the feelings and emotions of so many when she wrote the poem, “And The People Stayed Home”. It quickly gained traction and went viral as people found hope and light in her beautiful words during such a hard time. Oprah even called her “the poet laureate of the pandemic"
After being shared across the internet, she took her poem and turned it into a picture book. Beautifully illustrated by Stefano Di Cristofaro and Paul Pereda, this book reminds us of the healing that took place in our homes and around the world as people stayed home to keep each other safe during the Covid 19 lockdown. Her words are poignant and hopeful. You can purchase it here.
I next encountered Kitty’s work while reading The Rare, Tiny Flower illustrated by Quim Torres. I was moved to tears as I read about a mysterious flower that appears as a different color to everyone who sees it. Everyone is sure their view of the flower is the correct one and and tensions rise as the try to prove they are correct. War became the answer.
The problem is solved when a girl points out that a flower can be more than one thing. It is a gorgeous book that celebrates difference, tolerance, unity, and understanding. I can’t think of a time when I have needed this message more. The Rare, Tiny Flower is a title I want to shout from the roof tops. You can purchase it here.
Imagine my excitement to learn that O’Meara’s newest book is here and is stunning and moving like her others!
Let me just give you a peek at Oliver And The Night Giants and let you read the dedication:
Oliver and The Night Giants reads like a nostalgic fairy tale, it’s a magical book for kids. Oliver is visited one night by three giants. They have come to ask for his help as they complete their nightly mission of restoring the world’s beauty and peace. When he hesitates, they assure him that he is the right boy for the job.
Throughout his life experiences, Oliver has learned to doubt himself and his instincts. His night with the giants is spent mending and taking care of the world and Oliver learns that he has unique gifts and perspective to offer.
A wonderful reminder that art matters, your voice matters, YOU matter and you make a difference. The illustrations by Anna Pirolli are captivating and dream-like. it is easy to get lost in their vivid colors and whismical view. This book would make a beautiful baby shower gift or the perfect bedtime read aloud for anyone, but especially kids who struggle with their self-esteem. You can purchase it here.
It seems that every time Kitty O’Meara writes- my hope grows- and I can’t think of a better thing to look forward to from an author. I hope she keeps the wonderful books coming!
